A disused platform

This week’s photo challenge from the Daily Post is Spare.  I am using the word in the sense “surplus to requirements”.

Travelling by train I noticed a mass of yellow flowers growing in an inhospitable place.  Although it was raining I decided to take a photo through the train window.

The plant is in the vetch family. The platform is at Whitehaven station in Cumbria.  The most likely reason it is no longer used is that access to it was via a subway with steps up and down.  Now all the trains stop at one of two platforms with level access.

I also liked the yellow beyond the platform – a marked contrast to the dull day.

Later I travelled by train on a sunny day and took the next photo from the less used end of the busiest platform.
